Purpose
Today in 2023, male fear of female sexuality, independence and dominance still holds relevance. The overturn of Roe V. Wade back in June of this year was followed by an intense retaliation against the patriarchy that made the shifting state of feminism in American society even more apparent. The progressive work of women who fought for women’s rights and gender equality over the last century has shaped modern feminism; however, the core concept of feminism has still not translated into political, social, and economic equity. Women want to take back control over their bodily autonomy, reproductive rights, and personal safety.
This state of civil and political unrest has influenced today’s zeitgeist, which can be characterized by the need to express complete autonomy from external influences through dominance and confidence. Women are simply reclaiming what has been repressed for far too long. The uterus made of flowers is a feminist symbol representative of the need to protect reproductive freedoms. An image of a desk covered with paper and open laptops are used to depict how the Femme Fatale is ambitious, authentic, creative, and highly motivated. She is career driven and focused on success, based on the definition of success she creates for herself. The femme fatale lives unapologetically. She is not afraid to make a statement by wearing whatever she wants to wear, and the sign reading “Don’t tell me how to dress! Tell them not to rape!!,” shows how women don’t dress to appeal to anyone but themselves. Women are focusing on themselves early on, and building a foundation for themselves, through the pursuit of a higher education and work. Women desire to control their sexuality and lives, they do not wish for men to dictate their lives and body.
